My work represents the hidden beauty that is all around us if you just look a little closer.
My bowls come mostly from the unusual growths on trees called burls and unique pieces I find in the firewood pile. They are turned on the outboard end of a lathe with a large scraping tool.
I do not start the creative process with a design in mind, nor do I study the piece of wood for a great length of time. I just run with what I have and release the form that is already there. Sometimes the results are disastrous and sometimes they are stunning. They are almost always dangerous to turn.
I sand each piece with 800 to 1000 grit paper followed with several coats of hand rubbed Danish oil. This allows you to feel the wood rather than an applied finish such as laquer or wax.
These bowls are made to be touched. Feel the curves, feel the softness, and feel the beauty of wood.
